Luck Artists Dream, Succeed, and Achieve!
The Visual Arts Classic (VAC) is a yearly art competition hosted by members of the Wisconsin Art Education Association. Every high school has the opportunity to have twelve students compete in a variety of categories as well as team challenges including an art history quiz bowl and critical thinking. Teams accumulate points based on individual projects and team challenges. Awards are given in all aspects including an overall team winner. Individuals and teams advance to state competition respectively for all portions of VAC.
The theme of this year’s completion is Art and Science. Students were told that they among other things, they would need to be familiar with Leonardo da Vinci, Rube Goldberg, Beatrix Potter, David Macaulay, David Goodsell, Camille Pissarro, Albrecht Dürer, Kate MacDowell, Theo Jansen, Ernst Haeckel, Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Kahn, and the ”Golden Ratio.” An in-depth study of artists and cultures, the periods in which they lived, their lives, works, major concepts/ directions, and influenced is required to fully incorporate art history, criticism, and aesthetic understanding to the making of art which is central to this process. This knowledge is also necessary for successfully competing on-site in the team Critical Thinking Problem and the Art History Quiz Bowl.
This year was exceptional for Luck High School. Following last year's win at Regionals and State, this year the Luck team was able to obtain first-place in the quiz bowl, critical thinking, and "overall" competitions during the Regional Competition at UW-Stout. Numerous individuals earned first-places. Once again Luck will represent the region in Madison at the State Visual Arts Classic competition.
