Water Aerobics

Course Fee: $34.42 / $14.00 ages 62+
Water aerobics offers the benefits of a cardio workout without the high impact of regular aerobics. The resistance of the water gives a good all-over workout, while you strengthen your various muscle groups. The buoyancy of the water means less stress on your body. No swimming skills are required.
Adult Strength Training
Mondays & Wednesdays, March 1 - April 7
3:15 - 4:15 pm at the Luck Senior Center
Course Fee: $34.42 / $4.00 ages 62+
You can do so much with so little! This 6-week program incorporates weight training, core and functional exercises to improve your balance, coordination and strength. You will not only feel better, see improvements in your body tone and your mood, you’ll get into the habit of moving, working out and feeling good. In this class we utilize free weights (3# and/or 5# hand weights) a bench, and a Swiss exercise ball. (The weights and ball can be purchased at Wal-Mart.) The class will consist of a warm-up period, the strength-building segment, and also address awareness, attitude and diet tips. This is your opportunity to get STRONG. The journey to fitness is a process. Start by registering for the class!
Conquer Cluttered Closets

Wish you had some creative solutions for your closet clutter challenges? Professional Organizer Susi McCune will share practical techniques to help you make a place for everything...and then put everything in its place. Learn the Magic Question that will get your closet under control. Wouldn't it be great to have an organized place for all your clothes, shoes, purses, etc., etc.? Find out how to get it without emptying everything into a pile on the bed! Being organized

Cooking: Thai Food
Monday, March 8

Instructor: Barb Kass
You will find delicious Thai recipes and information, tips and techniques for cooking Thai-style at this class. During this two-hour session, participants will prepare and enjoy an appetizer, salad, main dish, and dessert that will be easy to create in your own kitchen. Come hungry! A supply fee will be paid to the instructor at class to cover food expenses.
Massage for Family and Friends

Everyone knows that massage is great for relaxation, but do you know it’s also beneficial for your immune system and reduces the stress hormones in your body? It’s also good for circulation, helps sore muscles to heal faster, and has positive effects on your blood pressure, digestion, and your outlook on life. And it’s good for almost everybody… from babies to the elderly.
Over three classes, we’ll discuss the positive effects of massage and learn some techniques to use for family and friends. Learn the benefits of massage and specific techniques to relieve headaches, backaches, muscle spasms, and recovering from injury.
Bring a family member or friend if possible, as we’ll be pairing up and working on each other. The classes will be both fun and informative.
Sue Ames-Lillie is a certified and registered massage practitioner in Luck, Balsam Lake, and at St. Croix Regional Medical Center, and owner of Balancing the Elements Therapeutic Massage.

Writing: Write Right Now!
Thursdays, March 11 - April 15

Instructor: Carolyn Wedin
This class is designed to assist writers in projects they are working on, as well as to introduce interesting writing exercises to get the writer within going. This course is very much built around the participants, their writing wishes, hopes, dreams, and ambitions.
The 4 a.m. Breakthrough, by Brian Kitely, is rich with exercises and ideas that inspire both short and long creations, expository and fictional prose, poetry, and forms in between. The book will be available from the instructor for $11.00.
Gluten-Free Baking: Breads

For those of us on a gluten-free diet, treats become a problem. Linda Leef will provide recipes and samples of some great desserts and help you find resources for baking them at home. Hands-on class with a take-home dessert. Limit to 10 students.

Expand your cooking skills and learn to make some delicious Asian dishes. Instructor
Marlene Denissen will guide the class in preparing egg rolls, fried rice, and egg drop soup during this two-hour class. Bonus: you eat what you make!

Woodworking: Make a Longbow
Thursdays, Feb. 4-March 25

Instructor: Tony Jenson
Enjoy good conversation and humor while learning from a woodworking pro! Tony Jenson will lead participants through the process of making a functional, heirloom longbow that will last a lifetime. Each student will have a choice of the Neolithic European Design or the Eastern Native American Design. All wood used is indigenous to our area. Please call Community Ed. (472-2152 ext. 103) for a tool and material list. Staves will be available for $25 from the instructor.
Quilting: Evening Spin Quilt
Saturdays, Feb. 6 and March 6

Instructor: Mary Wolff
“Evening Stars” is a rich-looking quilt and is a project you’ll be proud to display! Using dark blues and variations, the finished quilt looks like a sky full of evening stars. Quilters of all skill levels are welcome to take this class, as Mary Wolff is a positive and patient teacher. Class participants will learn how to paper piece the stars. The finished quilt size is 72” x 84”. Ask for a photo and fabric list when you register for this class by calling Amy Aguado at 472-2152 ext. 103.

Quilting: T-Shirt Memory Quilt
Saturday, March 20

Instructor: Lee Spanner
T-shirts from your sports days, high school, college, hobbies, vacations etc., can be recycled into a beautiful memory quilt. In this class you will learn how to work with the stretchy t-shirts you’ve collected and prepare them as a block, set them with sashings and finish it off with a border. We’ll discuss different ways to finish the top into a fabulous quilt. T-shirt quilts make perfect gifts for the graduate going off to college or anyone else with memories to save and treasure. If you, a child or a friend have drawers overflowing with t-shirts, this class will teach quilter's of all skill levels how to preserve them into a useful item for many years to come.

Art: Recycled Wind Chimes

We all have “junk” that we’re attached to and can’t toss. Turn that old silverware and broken pottery into a unique wind chime! Share ideas with others during this class, and use your imagination to combine recycled items to make music in the wind. Pre-register for this class and ask for a materials list at 472-2152 ext. 103.
Fitness: T'ai Chi Chih
Thursdays, March 18 - April 23

Instructor: Luann Kleppe
This is a simple, easy to learn enjoyable form of T'ai Chi. It is a movement meditation which can be practiced anywhere and by any person, regardless of age or physical ability. There are 20 flowing movements which assist in bringing better balance, toning and strengthening of the body, along with cultivating inner peace.
Instructor Luann Kleppe Kintree has performed sacred interpretive dance for 18 years, taught creative movement and is a lifelong practitioner of several movement meditations.
In this course, you’ll develop a lifestyle program that can add huge rewards, including a stronger heart and bones, higher energy levels, better weight control, and more.
Art: Painted Rocks

Rock painting is a relatively cheap and fun hobby for both children and adults. Whether you’re an amateur or more advanced artist, this class will jumpstart your creativity to paint animals, ladybugs, flowers, family name, or inspirational quotes. The finished rock creations will look great tucked into spots of your garden or yard, or given as a long-lasting gift.

Certified Fire Fighter I

Upon completion of this course, the student will have covered the objectives of NFPA 1001-1993 Edition for Firefighter I except those objectives related to fire department organization and emergency medical care. This course does NOT include certification testing for Firefighter I.

Bonsai Trees

Learn to create your own bonsai tree. You will learn to plant, prune and properly care for your tree during this 3-hour class. Instructor Gary Ganje is well-qualified to explain the ancient practice of “tray planting”, especially the distinct and beautiful bonsai trees. Beginning Computers

Whether you’ve never used a computer before, or are unfamiliar with the Windows operating platform, this class is designed to start from scratch in helping you form a friendly and cooperative relationship with your Windows Personal Computer. This class will begin with understanding hardware, keyboard, and mouse functions; continue with desktop settings and software functions, and conclude with internet, email applications and overall review. This class will be taught with the Windows XP operating system.

Herbal First Aid

Learn about kitchen herbs, garden weeds, and other herbal remedies for minor first aid injuries and illnesses.
H. Leah Wolfe, MPH is a community herbalist with a background in behavioral health research and community organizing for health. She completed a masters degree in public health at Portland State University and studied herbalism at the Elderberry School of Botanical Medicine. She is a member of Mutual Aid Street Medics, an organization that teaches basic first aid and provides medical support during emergency situations and convergences. Wolfe is the founder of The Serpentine Project (http://serpentine-project.org), an educational endeavor to protect and cultivate medicinal plants and traditional approaches to healing.

Luck School and Community Newsletter
Luck Community Education will lead the publishing and mailing of five newsletters during the 2009-2010 school year. Thanks to grants received from Polk-Burnett Operation Round-Up and the Luck Ruby’s Pantry community outreach program, the majority of printing and mailing costs of 2,000 newsletters will be covered. The newsletters will be bulk mailed to the Luck zip code and labeled for school families and requests not in the Luck zip code. Remaining newsletters will be displayed in a stand at the Luck Library and other public locations where the newsletters are welcome.

Help build a legacy in our community!
Trail Building Event
Ice Age National Scenic Trail
Straight Lake Wilderness State Park
May 11-16, 2010
Volunteer trail builders from all over the U.S. will gather near Luck in NW Wisconsin to continue construction of a 1,000 mile footpath throughout the state as the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.
Guided by experts and using only native materials, they will create an uncommon hiking experience that will last for generations.
Wild many will work to build trails, others will serve as greeters, materials runners, camp cooks, and even nighttime entertainers.
You are invited to partake in this working celebration of a special hiking trail. Volunteer opportunities will be open throughout this event, so please come for a few hours or a few days.
Free camping is available and meals are provided.
