Luck Alumni Foundation

The Luck Public High School has been educating students since 1921. The Luck Alumni Scholarship Foundation Association was formed to raise money to be used for scholarships and other projects to benefit the students and graduates of LHS.

In 2008, a few Luck alumni began a grass-roots effort to form a scholarship fund. Their first hurdle was to achieve 501(c)3 tax exempt status in order to begin fundraising. By reaching out to all alumni of the Luck Public Schools, they raised enough money over the next three years to distribute three $300 scholarships to 2012 graduates.

Over the next few years, with continued alumni donations & the profits from the annual Lucky Days In and Out of Luck 5K Run, Ice Fishing Contest, as well as a 5-year grant commitment, the account balances grew to sufficient levels. In 2017, 20 $500 scholarships were awarded to graduates. The following year, 25 $1,000 scholarships were awarded to 2018 graduates! The Board of Directors approved the amount of $2,000 for the 2023-2028 scholarships.

Collaboration with the Luck Public Schools has made the candidate selection process fair and equitable. The criteria is simple: students need not be the top achievers in the class and a mix of both university and technical college bound seniors is selected. The scholarship committee at the school provides a list of candidates to the board for approval.

With enough support, the foundation can expand to support other needs at LHS. A contribution was made for improvements to the stage backdrop for graduation ceremonies. Annually, $500 is donated to buy supplies for teachers and basic items needed in the classroom. $1,000 is also provided annually for use as a safety net for students who need assistance with school and extracurricular fees.

Scholarships

To date, nearly 100% of the LASFA scholarship monies awarded have been paid out to LHS students. To receive their scholarship award, the student must provide proof of successful completion of the first semester of study and proof of enrollment in the next semester, whether at a University or Technical College. Considering the continued escalation of education costs, providing financial assistance to Luck graduates is critical. The scholarship money will assist to buy books or tuition, and there is also an immeasurable value for a graduate to feel supported by other alumni. Of course, the hope is that these students will in turn support the scholarship fund once they have completed their course of study.

Effective 10/1/2015, donations can be directed to LASFA from Thrivent Financial's Thrivent Choice® program. These gifts will help to further support LHS students. By directing Choice Dollars® through Thrivent Choice, eligible members recommend where Thrivent Financial distributes some of its charitable outreach grant dollars among thousands of participating nonprofit organizations and congregations. (Directing Choice Dollars and receiving funds from the Thrivent Choice program are subject to the Terms and Conditions of the Thrivent Choice program.)

Cardinal Safety Nest and School Supplies

The Luck Alumni Scholarship Foundation started the Cardinal Safety Nest with a $1,000 donation, which is separate from the $500 already given for classroom supply needs.

At the 2019 Spring Meeting, it was decided that some funds would be donated back to the school to be used by all teachers if they have a student in special need. Since teachers often know exactly who these students are, a simple request form was created to be submitted to the Community Education Director when a need arises. At this point, the board views the funds going toward things like field trips, backpacks, clothing, lunch money, etc. The hope is to help students overcome any hardships they face.

The vision for future funding for the Cardinal Safety Nest will be an online campaign specific to the “nest” project. As word of this new program spreads, more and more will want to contribute to help our local school children, and not necessarily only a graduating senior.

Annually since 2017, the Luck Alumni Scholarship Fund has provided $500 to the Luck School for classroom supplies. This money buys supplies needed daily by both students and teachers and helps close a gap between school funding and daily needs.

Alumni Hall of Fame

Coming soon is the creation of a Luck Alumni Hall of Fame. This idea will encourage nominations of past and present faculty and students for special recognition. While we are in the beginning planning stage for this project, we have set a goal to announce our first inductees at the grand opening of the new school addition in 2023.
